You Are Not Alone

Addiction is an insidious disease that destroys a life from the inside out. Unlike other diseases, addiction transforms the personality and character of a person in such a way that those closest to the addict are often the ones hurt the most. Whether an individual is addicted to drugs, alcohol, sex, or gambling, the progression of the illness and the consequences are very similar; an activity that was once done in moderation becomes the sole focus of the addict’s life, taking precedence even over friends and family.

As an addiction progresses, the addict loses more and more control over their emotions and behaviors. This loss of control happens early in the course of the disease, almost always before the addict recognizes it themselves. Unfortunately, by the time an addict does recognize that there is a problem, it is usually too late, and very few will be able to stop on their own.

No one can be forced into treatment against their will, and the efforts of friends and family to help an addict often backfire. At the beginning, an addict’s loved ones often unwittingly enable the addiction by repeatedly helping the addict escape negative consequences through loaning them money or tolerating unacceptable behavior. As the addiction progresses, the opposite frequently occurs and the addict becomes alienated from the family. Families end up feeling caught in an impossible battle, desperately wanting to help but not knowing how.

This is why an intervention can be life saving – it gets the addict into treatment before their addiction takes everything.
